Taking Responsibility for Success
Some of the most challenging times have come directly because of something I was responsible for. It wasn’t an outside force… it was me. I am responsible for where I am in this life – right now.
Why am I telling you this? The reason I am telling you this is because I believe in order to move forward and become successful, you need to take responsibility for what you have done in your past. This is the only way to move forward. No matter how checkered, shady or fantastic your life has been, you have to understand that it’s this way because you have taken the necessary steps to put you in this present place.
You might be asking youself, “What does this have to do with SEO or traffic generation”? The short answer is… nothing at all; however, in order to fully understand the complexity (or simplicity based on how you want to look at it) of responsibility as it relays to success you need to be able to associate it with your own particular experience(s).Coming from a background of business development (a fancy way of saying sales), I’ve been through a lot in the past 15 years. Like many people in this field, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of the preverbial roller coaster that is month-to-month sales. Due to innovation and technology many things have changed over this time and I am the first to say that sales is not an easy profession to get involved with. This being said, the highs definitely outweigh the lows in terms of success.
It is important to identify various points in your life as game changing moments. Without coming off to cliche, taking the low road, or the road less traveled is a popular expression that really makes a lot of sense. Knowing when to dig in and when to move out are decisions that will ultimately change, not only the direction you are travelling now, but the destination in which you will and want to arrive.
Where are you today? Are you happy with where you are? No matter what your answers are identify those game changing moments and make the necessary adjustments if you have yet to acheive your goals. If you have identified the decisions you made that helped you toward those goals, don’t change because chances are, you have made good choices throughout your life.
The biggest question I guess is … how do you know which decision is the right decision? You don’t. However, you have to trust your gut, your instinct. Research, learn, inquire and decide. Many of us keep finding ourselves in the same rut over and over again…why? The answer is we keep making easy choices and we know they are wrong, but because we receive a little success up front, we believe this time it will work.
I am here to let you know this is no way to live your life. Suck it up in the beginning and reap the rewards with a fantastic lifestyle. Before you know it, you will be enjoying the fruits of your labor because you know how much better the reward was since your worked that much harder for it.
What is Success?
The line between insanity and genius is very thin and is measured by the level of success one has acheived. I heard that on a James Bond movie the other day and thought it sounded pretty good. If you think about it, many of the successful people you see or hear about are indeed eccentric to a certain degree and they share many of the same traits as those that may be considered insane. I’m not talking about associating success with Mark Zuckerberg or insanity with Charles Manson. I am more describing how different people measure success in different ways.
The next time you pass someone on the street that may not look like they have there shit together, but take a moment and think about who that person is. Perhaps they have chosen this path and they like where they are. At the same time, understand that person made choices throughout his or her life that put them at that particular location at that particular time. Are they happy? Are they sad?
By understanding others and looking at their life with empathy, not sympathy, may help you grow and learn more about yourself and where you want to be. No matter what you have done in your past, you still have a future. So far your past actions have shaped your present, but the future is still up to you. Make the most of it and challenge yourself to do something unbelievable.
