Linking the time when karate was a strictly Okinawan art of self-defense shrouded in the deepest secrecy and the present day, when it has become a martial art practiced throughout the world, is Gichin Funakoshi, the "Father of Karate-do." Out of modesty, he was reluctant to write this autobiography and did not do so until he was nearly ninety years of age. Trained in the Confucian classics, he was a schoolteacher early in life, but after decades of study under the foremost masters, he gave up his livelihood to devote the rest of his life to the propagation of the Way of Karate. Under his guidance, techniques and nomenclature were refined and modernized, the spiritual essence was brought to the fore, and karate evolved into a true martial art. Various forms of empty-hand techniques have been practiced in Okinawa for centuries, but due to the lack of historical records, fancy often masquerades as fact. In telling of his own famous teachers-and not only of their mastery of technique but of the way they acted in critical situations-the author reveals what true karate is. The stories he tells about himself are no less instructive: his determination to continue the art, after having started it to improve his health; his perseverance in the face of difficulties, even of poverty; his strict observance of the way of life of the samurai; and the spirit of self-reliance that he carried into an old age kept healthy by his practice of Karate-do.

The Summa simplified for everyone. Saint Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica is one of the most influential and significant works in the history of the world, but because of its' breadth and scope it is generally considered to be almost inaccessible to most readers. Until now. In My Way of Life Fathers Walter Farrell and Martin J. Healy champion a brilliant summation of the Thomistic doctrines that offers the reader an encounter with wisdom and the use of that wisdom in understanding and knowing our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ. My Way of Life presents small, concise portions of the Summa in a manageable format. This work will allow the reader to consider some of the highest thoughts of one of history's greatest minds and apply them to the modern world, including: • The Oneness of God • The nature of Angels (p. 63) • The hierarchy of angels, demons, and humans (p. 121) • Man's disposition to pursue happiness • The Divine Life in man • The Incarnation Jesus and its ramifications (p. 443) • The Last Things (Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell) With My Way of Life the timelessness of the Summa is now accessible to all. In a world that seems to simultaneously advance in some areas and regress in others, the Summa Theologica powerfully reminds the reader that by definition, the true, and the good, and the beautiful never change. A portion of the proceeds from every purchase of this Confraternity of the Precious Blood title go directly to The Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood in Brooklyn, NY to support them in their vocation.

Here is presented the masterpiece of St. Thomas — the Summa Theologica — in simplified form. This vast summary of Thomistic teaching which deals with every worthwhile truth from A to Z, from the attributes of God to the zeal of man has been distilled into this little volume. It is, in truth, a miniature and simple Summa for everyman. As its name signifies, the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas is the sum total of all theological knowledge, a vast synthesis in which is unfolded all that can be known of God and man. It is divided into three parts which deal with God, man and the God-man, respectively. It comprises 38 tracts, 631 questions, about 3,000 articles, 10,000 objections and their answers. Obviously all of this vast material is not contained in this small volume. However, an earnest effort has been made by the authors to translate and re-present St. Thomas in concise form for the use of everyman. The Confraternity of the Precious Blood in presenting this volume, aims to do for the Summa of St. Thomas what it has already done for the Missal—to place it into the hands of all men. The millions who have found Father Stedman’s “My Sunday Missal” so helpful and practical for the Mass of the Altar will find “My Way of Life” equally helpful and practical for the “Mass of Life”. St. Thomas begins the Prologue to his great work with these words: “Because a teacher of Catholic truth ought not only to teach the learned but also to instruct the beginners, in accordance with the words of the Apostle: As unto little ones in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat (1 Cor. 3/1,2) we purpose in this book to treat of whatever belongs to the Christian religion in such a way as may tend to the instruction of beginners.” The volume, here presented, is in full accord with the purpose of St. Thomas. It brings his message from the halls of learning out into the market place and into the home. While primarily meant for everyman, it is profound enough for the most erudite. Hence it can be readily recommended to father and mother, sister and brother, to the high-school and college student, to the convert, the study and Newman Club, to the Confraternity class, to the religious and the priest, in a word, it can be recommended to everyone. Are they here to take me home? Will they get my blue dress out of the closet for me to wear? she wondered. Even though she did not recognize these caring young people, she felt in her mind that they were a very important part of her life. In the home where she is to remain throughout her physical life, Ms. Rae intermittently reverses to the concerns of her past. Is her dear pony, Silver, being well cared for? Will the severe weather she observes through her window ruin the corn crop? The fusion of the language of her soul as she flashes back to those days with her perception of the present creates a motivating question: Are Alzheimeras patients capable of inner feelings and detailed recollections though they are unable to communicate them? It is up to each reader to determine their own elucidation. This is a unique, evocative novelaa moving story of courage and compassion.

"Frank 'O' Blue Eyes' Sinatra in the fifties and sixties is the explosive, explicitly profane story of one of the most venerated entertainers of our time. The year 1950 is a time of extreme emotional turmoil for the beleaguered Sinatra. His plunge from the epitome of popularity is highly attributed to his clandestine affair with beautiful actress Ava Gardner. As a result, his TV show, personal appearances, recording sessions and movie audience attendance suffer greatly. His highly publicized separation and eventual divorce from wife Nancy leads to a tempestuous two-year marriage to the ravishing Ava. While Frank is unable to solve Ava's quintessence, he can never get over his profound, unyielding love for her. She remains the girl of his dreams. Following his motion picture Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film "From Here To Eternity" in 1954, his career resurges to new and even greater heights. His ill-fated marriage to rising star Mia Farrow who is 30 years younger and is called a "hippie" and "flower girl" results in a roller coaster ride ending after only two tumultuous years. Join with Frank as he once again journeys to the top of the entertainment world, accompanied by the fabled "Rat Pack," consisting of Dean martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, Shirley MacLaine and several others. Frank is highly responsible for the election of President John Kennedy. This story is told in first person by Marty tanner - one of FrankSinatra's close associates.

In 1998, Andrea Stanfield told a lie that became the foundation of her professional life. In an interview with the accounting department of a Florida engineering firm, she claimed, verbally and on paper, that she held a bachelors degree in business from a large midwestern university. In fact she had only a high school diploma. Through sheer moxie and impressive interviewing skills, she got the job, and eventually this lie became the steppingstone for a very successful professional life. This is the story of a liar, not a born liar but someone who as a young person full of ambition started taking shortcuts and realized she could get away with it. Blessed with native intelligence and the ability to think quickly on her feet, Andrea navigated her way through professional management circles and a series of salary increases. When the opportunity to move to another company arose, she took the chance of being caught and interviewed again. Faced with a background check, she compounded her previous deceptions by arranging for a very realistic but fake diploma. Once again, the lie worked and she went on to succeed in her new company as never before. Eventually, the girl with the high school diploma ended up as the manager of the two largest financial districts in the firm. Still in her early thirties, she oversaw twenty offices and forty employees, traveled frequently, became an adept public speaker and regional trainer, and was singled out for her leadership talent. In the end, the guilt of living under false pretenses took its toll. Part of her job involved advising employees in annual reviews to go back to school to advance their careers. How could she just "look people in the eye and lie"? What would she tell her growing daughter someday about the secret of her success? Part confessional, part morality play, this intriguing autobiographical tale of a "white lie" that snowballs into an avalanche is a warning to personnel managers, employers, and employees that people are not always all that they seem.
